Basilicata covers an extensive part of the southern Apennines between Ofanto to the north and the Monte Pollino massif to the south. The region has a short coastline on the Tyrrhenian sea and a longer coastline on the Ionian sea. Visit the prehistoric cave dwellings at Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO world heritage site. For decades these ancient and extraordinary dwellings have attracted the attention of scholars and artists. It was here that Mel Gibson filmed "The Passion of Christ".
